Exploring Point Reyes National Seashore

We visited Point Reyes National Seashore in California, exploring the coastal landscape of the park.
Point Reyes National Seashore, California
“Lace lichen was hanging off the branches all around us — that stringy, pale green stuff you see everywhere along this coast.”
Late afternoon at Point Reyes, we found a spot where you could look out over the bay through the trees. Lace lichen was hanging off the branches all around us — that stringy, pale green stuff you see everywhere along this coast. Two kayakers were out on the water below. We stayed for a while just watching them move around. By 5:30 the light had shifted and it was starting to feel like evening.
State Lichen
Lace lichen (Ramalina menziesii) became California's official state lichen in 2016 — the first state to designate one. It absorbs water entirely from fog and air, with no roots.
“The world is big and I want to have a good look at it before it gets dark.”
— John Muir, letter to his sister Sarah, 1873
